Yankees beat writer Pete Caldera and SNY’s Anthony McCarron break down the Yankees vs Red AL Wild Card Series.
NEW YORK – Moving ahead to Game 3…
There will be a decisive finale in this best-of-three AL Wild Card Series against the rival Boston Red Sox, and the Yankees will turn to a 24-year-old rookie from Walpole, Massachusetts.
“It’ll be Cam Schlittler,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday before the series started.
Boone’s first two starters were lefties Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, but immediately that there’s a Game 3, the Yankees might hold the advantage with this righty.
Not only is Schlittler (2.96 ERA, 14 starts) fearless, armed with high-octane stuff and possessed of a better feel and mix of his secondary pitches, but the Red Sox are unsettled for Game 3.
Boston veteran Lucas Giolito is dealing with elbow discomfort and is not on the Wild Card roster.
The Red Sox could turn to rookie lefty Connelly Early for Game 3, with a 2.33 ERA over his first four MLB starts.
Meanwhile, the Yankees have two capable starters potentially in reserve, though the Wild Card status of Will Warren and Luis Gil remained undefined Monday.
“You never know how a game is going to unfold,’’ said Boone, adding that he feels “confident with any of our five (starters). But Cam’s the guy to get that ball in Game 3.”
Schlittler said he’s prepared for any postseason role, following Saturday’s seven shutout innings against Baltimore, when the AL East title was still on the line.
“There was a little bit of pressure there,” said Schlittler. “But it’s something I enjoy.”
