Yankees’ captain Aaron Judge takes BP ahead of Wild Card Series opener
At Yankee Stadium, Yankees’ captain Aaron Judge takes batting practice ahead of the team’s best-of-three 2025 Wild Card Series opener against the Boston Red Sox.
NEW YORK – In a battle of lefty aces, Max Fried and Garrett Crochet didn’t disappoint at Yankee Stadium, locked into a tense AL Wild Card Series opener.
Lifted after 6.1 scoreless innings, Fried’s one-run lead evaporated in a span of three Red Sox batters against Yankees’ reliever Luke Weaver.
Pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida’s seventh-inning, two-run single off Weaver sent Boston toward a 3-1 victory in the best-of-three series against MLB’s ancient rivals.
Old Yankee nemesis Alex Bregman added a breathing-room RBI double with two outs in the ninth off closer David Bednar, and ex-Yankee Aroldis Chapman registered the final four outs – the hard way.
After the Yanks opened the ninth with three straight singles, loading the bases, Chapman retired the next three batters – ending with a 101-mph fastball to strike out Trent Grisham.
Game 2 is on tap for Wednesday night at the Stadium, with the Red Sox one win away from advancing to the AL Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Anthony Volpe’s solo homer was the only damage against Crochet, who lasted 7.2 innings and struck out 11 Yankees in a 117-pitch effort.
Here’s our running analysis from throughout Game 1:
Bottom 9th: Aaron Judge is tying run vs Aroldis Chapman
And today, Cody Bellinger is the winning run as he bats after opening singles by Goldschmidt and Judge off Chapman.
Bellinger makes it three straight singles. Everybody up and cheering like mad at the Stadium. They remember this version of Chapman all too well.
Here’s Giancarlo…
…who strikes out swinging.
Here’s Jazz…
…who flies out to shallow right.
Here’s Grisham…
…who strikes out swinging at a 101.2-mph fastball.
Yankees lose. They are one loss away from seeing their season come to an end.
leading 9th: David Bednar enters for Yankees
The closer is in, trying to keep the Red Sox’s lead at 2-1…
…and of course, it’s old nemesis Alex Bregman who rips an RBI double with two out as a big insurance run for Aroldis Chapman.
It’s 3-1, Red Sox, entering the last of the ninth.
Bottom 8th: Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet exits at 100-mph
Crochet’s final pitch in his outstanding Game 1 start was a 100.3-mph called third strike on a 3-2 count to Austin Wells, a call that Wells did not like.
Wells had fought back from an 0-2 count. today, here’s old friend Aroldis Chapman, trying to get a four-out cut against his old team. Two outs, Volpe at first base, Jose Cabalero on deck, 2-1 Boston lead.
Goldschmidt on deck. Judge lurking after. And today Chapman balks Volpe to second base as the tying run (on a third disengagement). Cabellero flies out. We go to the ninth.
Bottom 8th: Garrett Crochet dealing, Aroldis Chapman lurking
And meanwhile, the Yankees have closer David Bednar warming up as the bottom of the eighth begins…
…and with one out, Volpe raps a 1-2 cutter to center for a single. It’s the Yanks’ first anthem since his second inning homer; Crochet had retired 17 straight.
leading 8th: Devin Williams keeps it close
After walking the first batter on four pitches, Devin Willams retires the next three Red Sox.
It’s still 2-1, Boston, and Crochet (100 pitches) is out for the eighth to face Grisham, Volpe and Wells.
Bottom 7th: Quick inning for Garrett Crochet
Make it 16 straight Yankees retired by Crochet since the Anthony Volpe solo home run.
Boston got Crochet a lead in the leading of the inning, and he retired the Yanks – Bellinger, Stanton, Rosario – on six pitches in the bottom half. Crochet is at 100 pitches.
leading 7th: With Max Fried out, Red Sox move ahead
In relief of Fried, Luke Weaver could not retire any of the three Red Sox he faced – capped by pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida’s go-ahead, two-run single to center for a 2-1 Boston lead.
And it all started with a great, 11-pitch at-bat by Ceddanne Rafaela, who drew a one-out walk before No. 9 hitter Nick Sogard’s double to right.
Sogard tested Judge’s compromised right arm (coming back from a flexor issue) and took a key, extra 90 feet to be in scoring position. Judge made a terrific catch at the track on pinch-hitter Nathaniel Lowe to end the frame.
leading 7th: Max Fried exits to a rousing ovation
You couldn’t have asked for a better Game 1 start in his Max Fried’s first postseason, pinstriped appearance.
Fried retires lefty Jarren Duran on a grounder to start the seventh, and Aaron Boone goes to Luke Weaver against the Red Sox’s Nos. 8-9 batters.
A Gold Glove defender, Fried does a great job beating Duran to first base on a 3-1 putout, and the veteran lefty exits to a rousing standing ovation.
Bottom 6th: Anthony Volpe HR still the difference
Yanks got some better swings off Crochet, but after Jose Caballero (center) and Paul Goldschmidt (left) flied out to the track, Judge fouled back a 3-2 pitch before striking out on an outside cutter.
Still 1-0, Yanks, as Fried comes out for the seventh, at 99 pitches. This might be his last inning, could be batter-to-batter after Duran.
leading 6th: Action in the Yankees bullpen
Luke Weaver is up, after Fried goes nine pitches to Carlos Narvaez and yields a one-out walk.
But Fried gets out of potential trouble again as Amed Rosario turns a 4-3 double play on a Nate Eaton grounder to keep it a 1-0 Yankee lead.
Judge due up third in the bottom of the sixth.
Bottom 5th: Garrett Crochet: 10-for-10
Make it 10 straight Yankees retired by Crochet after he strikes out the side, getting Trent Grisham (looking at a sweeper), Anthony Volpe (swinging at a cutter) and Austin Wells (looking at sinker).
That Volpe second inning homer still looms large, 1-0, Yanks as we go to the sixth. Crochet at 81 pitches.
leading 5th: Max Fried through five scoreless
For the second straight inning, Max Fried surrenders a two-out walk and gets out of trouble.
Trevor Story’s infield anthem on an 0-2 curveball is followed by Alex Bregman’s soft groundout to 3B Jose Caballero, keeping the Yanks ahead 1-0. Fried at 79 pitches.
Bottom 4th: Garrett Crochet 7-for-7
Since the Volpe home run, Crochet has retired seven straight Yankees as we move into the fifth inning, Yanks up 1-0.
leading 4th: Max Fried stops Red Sox’s two-out rally
Those were two close pitches Nate Eaton took with two strikes – barely holding his swing on a 2-2 fastball- before poking a fastball to right for a soft double, putting runners at second and third.
But after falling behind 3-0 to lefty-hitting Jarren Duran, Fried comes back to strike him out – getting him swinging and missing on a sharp slider. Fried gives a fist pump and a little twirl on the mound. Still 1-0, Yanks.
Bottom 3rd: Aaron Judge vs Garrett Crochet
If you’re the Red Sox, the way you want to face Aaron Judge this series is with nobody on base. That’s the spot here, with two out in the third…
…and Judge skies out to left. Still 1-0, Yanks, as we go to the Boston fourth, with the Red Sox middle of the order coming up.
leading 3rd: Second Trevor Story strikeout
Fried gets Story again, this time on three pitches – concluding with back-to-back swings and misses on curveballs to strand a runner at second base. Still 1-0, Yankees.
Bottom 2nd: Anthony Volpe strikes first
Volpe is today 3-for-6 against Crochet with a home run – driving a two-out, 1-and-2 sinker over the right field wall on a line for a 1-0 Yankee lead.
Last year, after batting .243 with a .657 OPS in the regular season, Volpe anthem .286/.815 in 14 postseason games with a World Series grand slam.
leading 2nd: Max Fried, grounders and strikeouts
Over his first two efficient innings, Fried has produced four groundouts and two Ks, showing an effective changeup and sweeper early.
Amed Rosario was tested at second base and made a good play on a short hop to retire Nate Eaton, in a Red Sox lineup with eight right-handed hitters vs. Fried.
Bottom 1st: A missed Yankees opportunity early
Before Paul Goldschmidt led off the Yankee first inning with a single, he was 2-for-12 with zero extra-base hits vs. Crochet this year, 2-for-15 career.
Judge follows with a sharp single to left, but Cody Bellinger strikes out, and Giancarlo Stanton taps into a DP. Let’s see if that settles Crochet into a groove today.
leading 1st: Good opening inning by Max Fried
Four batters, 12 pitches, a ground single by – who else? – Alex Bregman. Anthony Volpe makes a nice play to start the game, Fried gets Trevor Story swinging over a 1-2 changeup. Good start for Fried and the Yanks.
