In a recent TikTok livestream with creator The Kristiana Smith, gospel icon Yolanda Adams challenged traditional ideas of God by using nontraditional pronouns and questioning the need to define the divine by gender. Speaking freely with her followers, Adams said she doesn’t believe God is exclusive to being seen as just “he” or “she,” saying God is spirit, something beyond what human language can box in.

“I don’t think that God is this small entity that people are trying to make him or her or it,” she shared. “Because he is spirit.”
Adams pointed out that assigning gender to God is more about how people are raised than it is about divine truth.
She pushed the conversation further by questioning how people can say they love God while showing hate to others.
“I can tell how much your God loves by the people you hate,” she said. “If God is love, how can you hate what he created?”
The singer also noted that the diversity in creation itself proves God’s expansive nature, using the countless varieties of flowers as a symbol of divine creativity and inclusivity.
“I have a problem with people who say they love God, but hate God’s sons and daughters,” she added.
The message was met with debate but also support from Christians who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, which has historically been scrutinized by the church.
