D.C.-area forecast: A soggy start to April with rain at times the next three days

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

3/10: A damp and dreary start to the new month.

  • Today: Showers, maybe a thunderstorm. Highs: Upper 50s and low 60s.
  • Tonight: Showers, maybe a thunderstorm. Lows: Near 50.
  • Tomorrow: Showers, maybe a thunderstorm. Highs: Near 50 north, 60 south.

A front stalled over the region associated with the storm system traveling across the nation brings repeated chances for rain through at least Wednesday. Gradually, we should dry out Thursday into Friday but, even then, it’s blustery and cooler than normal. Not until Sunday will warm sunshine start to take control.

Today (Monday): Showers and maybe even a thunderstorm or two are possible through around midday. But, during the afternoon, we may see a pause in the rain — well-timed for the Nationals home opener. Highs range from the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds are mostly light and variable. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: After a break in the rain, more showers and storms probably develop toward midnight and continue intermittently through dawn. Lows settle near 50. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Showers and thunderstorms are a good bet throughout the day. The best chance of storms — a few of which could be intense — will be toward central Virginia and southern Maryland. Into northern Virginia, the District and central Maryland, a wedge of cooler air probably reduces the chance of big storms. Highs are only near 50 from the Beltway northward but they may climb closer to 60 toward Fredericksburg. Winds are from the east at 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Rain showers and maybe a thunderstorm remain possible through much of Tuesday night — passing through intermittently. Lows range from 45 to 50. Confidence: Medium

Wednesday brings more occasional showers and possible thunderstorms as a cold front pushes through the region (but it won’t rain all the time). Ahead of the front, we could see temperatures briefly pop up to near 60 or so. Some showers could linger into Wednesday night when it turns breezy and cooler with lows 40 to 45. Confidence: Medium

Thursday is blustery and unseasonably chilly. We’ll have variable skies and the chance of a few showers that could even mix with graupel or a bit of wet snow, especially in our colder areas. Highs are only 50 to 55, but it won’t feel that warm. It’s very brisk Thursday night, with lows 35 to 40, but it feels like freezing with the wind. Confidence: Medium

Sunny skies return Friday and Saturday, but it’s still breezy and cool. Highs both days are in the 50s with lows Friday and Saturday nights in the 30s and low 40s. Finally, by Sunday, winds ease and it’s a sunny and mild afternoon with highs 60 to 65. Confidence: Medium-High
