D.C.-area forecast: Cool and showery today, with slow moderation this weekend

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: A cloudy, damp, breezy day. Somewhat raw for May, but it’s a typical part of our spring transition season around here. Drizzle, showers and even a couple of storms possible.

  • Today: Drizzle, showers. Thunderstorms, too? Highs: 56-62.
  • Tonight: Cloudy with lessening rain chances. Lows: Mid-40s to near 50.
  • Tomorrow: PM showers possible. Highs: Low-to-mid 60s.
  • Sunday: Showers, storms may focus on afternoon. Highs: 63-68.

It’s somewhat raw and chilly today and tonight with pesky dampness (beneficial rains could be limited, unfortunately). Sunshine levels increase a bit tomorrow and more so for Sunday. Temperatures may try to follow suit, increasing further into the 60s each day. Monday looks very warm and perhaps rain-free. Great timing, eh?

Today (Friday): Plan on some morning fog and drizzle. A few showers and even a couple of thunderstorms are possible almost anytime, though they should favor afternoon. Overall, most of us don’t see too much rain. Cloudiness helps subdue high temperatures in the upper 50s to perhaps low 60s in spots that see enough peeks of sunshine. Noticeable breezes blow from the east and northeast between 10 to 20 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Clouds continue with showers possible, but no big downpours expected. Breezes from the northeast should die down a bit, but it’s still chilly with temperatures bottoming out in the mid-40s to near 50. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): A little bit of sun in the morning, but clouds return midday and into the afternoon especially. A quick-moving wave of showers and storms may arrive by midafternoon, with highest rain chances during the late afternoon. High temperatures in the low-to-mid-60s have solid confidence behind them, but ultimate cloudiness levels are less certain. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Showers continue to be possible but waning with time. Temperatures dip into the upper 40s to low 50s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: We should have more sunshine than today and Saturday. A couple of showers may develop, but they should be fewer than recent days if so. The possible temperature range is a bit wider than Saturday, but so far looks to peak within a few degrees of 65 in much of the region. Confidence: Medium

Sunday night: It’ll be turning calmer and less cloudy with quickly decreasing rain chances during the evening. In the pre-dawn hours, we could see some fog and even some drizzle, however. Temperatures bottom in the upper 40s to low 50s. Confidence: Medium

Sunny and warm Monday should come with rain-free conditions, too. High temperatures should end up within a few degrees of 75. Confidence: Medium-High

Clouds are likely to make a return Tuesday, but rain amounts are less certain, which ties into the temperature forecast as well. So far, with afternoon hours, the focus of showers — which look light — we should be able to manage the low-to-mid-70s. If rain chances mostly evaporate or wait until nearer evening hours, we could get to around 80. An all-day rain would hold us in the 60s. Confidence: Low-Medium
