D.C.-area forecast: Heating up for the holiday weekend as storm chances return

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

7/10: Slight increase in temperatures and humidity. Yet so much nicer than the steamy stuff inbound for the holiday.

  • Today: Partly to mostly sunny, a touch warmer. Highs: Around 85 to 90.
  • Tonight: Partly cloudy, more humid. Lows: Upper 60s to low 70s.
  • Tomorrow: Hot and humid, scattered p.m. storms. Highs: Mid-90s.

After hitting 90 degrees or higher on 13 of the last 14 days of June, we’ve yet to reach that mark in D.C. through two days of July. Our pleasantly cooler stretch will be short-lived, however, possibly ending today and almost definitely tomorrow. After a warm and slightly more humid day today, we’re in the steam bath again July 4 into the weekend, with shower and thunderstorm chances that could mess with outdoor plans.

Today (Wednesday): One more decently nice day before the high heat and humidity return. Skies are partly to mostly sunny as temperatures trend a touch warmer with highs around 85 to 90. The humidity starts to become a bit more noticeable today, but it’s still pretty tame, with a breeze from the south around 10 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: The humidity rises more substantially during the evening and overnight. But we should stay dry with increasing overnight clouds and muggier lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Independence Day): Heat, we meet again. It’s a very D.C. Fourth with high heat and humidity. Highs should make the mid-90s under partly sunny skies, with the heat index reaching at least near 100. Decent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the mid-afternoon into evening. That doesn’t mean everyone will see a storm, but the potential for impact on July 4 festivities is definitely there. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible well into the evening. Overnight lows only dip to the very muggy low to mid-70s. Confidence: Medium

We’re partly sunny, hot and very humid Friday and Saturday with highs both days at least in the low to mid-90s, and the heat index peaking near or above 100. Both days have a significant chance of scattered showers and storms during the mid-afternoon into evening. Still very muggy Friday night and Saturday night with lows in the 70s. Confidence: Medium

A cold front moving through Saturday night should lower humidity a bit for Sunday, but may stay close enough for a chance of showers and storms, although probably a lower chance than the previous few days. Highs top out around 90 to the mid-90s. Confidence: Low-Medium
