D.C.-area forecast: Muggy through Thursday with daily downpour chances

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: It’s warmer than the weekend and not a washout. That’s progress. But it’s muggy, and downpours could come through late in the day.

  • Today: Mostly cloudy, warm. Late day showers/storms possible. Highs: Near 80.
  • Tonight: Evening showers/storms likely. Lows: 61 to 66.
  • Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy. Afternoon showers/storms possible. Highs: Near 80.

For the first time this year, we deal with considerable mugginess and, with all the moisture in the air, daily opportunities for showers and storms through at least Thursday. It’s very warm and won’t rain the whole time, so don’t give up hope for outdoor plans. Just have a Plan B. We will attempt to at least partially dry out over the weekend as it turns considerably cooler, but may not be able to totally shake rain chances.

Today (Monday): It’s cloudier than not — with some areas of fog early on. It’s also rather humid (dew points in the mid-60s). While a passing shower can’t be ruled out any time, we’ll probably be dry most of the day. The chance of showers and storms increases during the late afternoon but the bulk of the rain may hold off until evening. Highs are near 80 and winds are very light. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: There’s a good chance of showers and storms during the evening and some could contain some pretty heavy rain. A few pockets of flooding can’t even be ruled out. Most of the rain should move off after midnight when some areas of fog will probably develop. Lows are in the low-to-mid 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s a lot like Monday with warm, humid conditions and a lot of cloud cover. The sun could sneak through at times before scattered showers and storms develop, especially in the afternoon (probably a little earlier in the day compared to Monday). Highs are near 80 with winds from the south. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Some showers and storms could continue into the evening before dissipating and moving off overnight. Lows are again in the low-to-mid 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Warm and humid conditions continue Wednesday and Thursday, and both days could bring late day showers and storms; Thursday has the higher rain chances of the two days. Some strong to severe storms can’t be ruled out Thursday, but it’s too soon to know how widespread they’ll be or their timing. Wednesday’s the week’s warmest day with highs from 85 to 90, while highs may be closer to the low 80s on Thursday. Lows continue on the warm side both Wednesday and Thursday nights, only slipping into the mid-60s or so. Confidence: Medium

The cold front that triggered probable showers and storms on Thursday may stall near or just east of the area on Friday keeping the chance of showers in the forecast (especially near Interstate 95 and to the east). It will be noticeably less warm, with highs closer to 70. Some showers could still linger Friday night, with lows in the 50s. Confidence: Medium

We’re going to try to dry out for the weekend, but may not totally succeed. Some dry hours and partial sunshine are a good bet each day, but some showers could pop up — particularly in the afternoon. Highs both days are cooler than normal, only near 70. Nighttime lows range from 50 to 55. Confidence: Low-Medium
