Summer is still weeks away, but the season’s first surge of superheated air is set to spread over the southern United States in just five or six days. It could set records from southern Texas to the Southeast as temperatures surge 10 to 25 degrees above normal.
Between the middle of next week and the start of Mother’s Day weekend, highs are projected to reach at least 90 degrees from Texas into the Carolinas. It will be even hotter across South Texas and adjacent parts of Mexico — especially near the Rio Grande — where highs could surge to 105 to 110 degrees on multiple days.
