The numbers aren’t adding up for the accounting profession. Fewer students are majoring in accounting, and fewer still are pursuing and passing the CPA exam. The talent pipeline is at risk of slowing to a trickle, and meanwhile accounting firms are having to do more with less, only worsening conditions in the profession.
There are plenty of factors to blame. The barrier to entry became steeper with the 150-hour rule, and most states mandate earning an additional 30 hours of college credit to qualify…
