Leo Varadkar ‘accepts responsibility’ for referendum result

Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar says “it is clear” that two referendums have been defeated.

The referendums were in relation to family and care in the Republic of Ireland.

He was speaking as early indications showed a significant number of ‘no’ votes.

Mr Varadkar said it was clear both amendments had been “defeated comprehensively on a respectable turnout”.

He added that the Irish government accepted the result and will “respect it fully.”
